Outdoors

What makes Wellfleet great? For many people, it’s our amazing setting. Located on a narrow spit of land near the tip of Cape Cod, we’ve got Cape Cod Bay on one side, the Atlantic Ocean on the other, and in between, an intimate landscape of salt marshes, sandy beaches, freshwater ponds, upland heath, dunes, pine and oak woods. Over 60% of Wellfleet’s land is protected from development, through the Cape Cod National Seashore, Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Town of Wellfleet, and Wellfleet Conservation Trust.

There are so many different ways to discover this special place:

  • Kayak or sail in Wellfleet Harbor
  • Hike the 7 miles to the tip of Great Island’s Jeremy Point
  • Bike the Cape Cod Rail Trail beginning in South Wellfleet
  • Build a sand castle below the cliffs at Newcomb Hollow Beach
  • Go flyfishing on a charter boat and bring home your dinner
  • Try out the quarter-pipe and concrete “pool” at the professionally-designed skateboard park
  • Train your binoculars on a pair of diving gannets
  • Wander through the Pilgrim Spring Woodlands in the early morning

Want to learn something new, or meet up with other people who have similar interests? Recreation programs offer all kinds of activities for every age. Play in a spring softball league. Do-si-do your partner and dance with the crowds at the famous Wednesday night Town Pier square dances in summer. Learn how to spot migrating shorebirds on a crisp fall afternoon. Or bundle up to go offshore for a late winter seal cruise. 365 days a year, in every kind of weather, you’ll find plenty to stretch your body – and your mind.
