The Outer Cape has been well known as an artists’ colony for more than 100 years. Wellfleet continues to draw painters, sculptors, writers, designers, photographers, and scholars, making it a vital place to make, and experience, the arts throughout the year. Known as the “art gallery town’ for more than 20 galleries, Wellfleet has a long tradition of supporting the arts and artists. We are also home to the Cape Cod Modern House Trust, which is documenting and preserving the Modernist houses designed here by Marcel Breuer and other well-known 20th century architects and creating an off-season artists’ residency program. The Boston Globe calls the cutting-edge Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, or WHAT, “a jewel in Massachusetts’ crown” for professional theater. If you’re looking for outstanding live music, you’ll find everything from reggae stars to string quartets playing at restaurants, bars, churches, and outdoor venues. The celebrated, 5-star Wellfleet Public Library hosts over 900 events each year. Construction is underway to create Wellfleet Preservation Hall, a local community project to restore the former Catholic Church on Main Street into a year-round cultural center in the heart of downtown Wellfleet. Wellfleet also draws visitors and residents together for special events like October’s Wellfleet OysterFest, a two-day street party celebrating the town's famous oysters, clams and shellfishing traditions. October is also Fall for the Arts Festival, a free family-friendly festival showcase of local art and culture.
