Skateboarding
Spills and thrills, with no cars to dodgeBy Kathy Shorr Globe
Boston Globe, April 20, 2008
WELLFLEET - "When I first got this job 11 years ago," says Becky Rosenberg, Wellfleet recreation director, "there was a police detail outside Town Hall to give tickets for skateboarding."
In those days, kids would congregate on the lawn outside Town Hall, and spill into the street, frequently skateboarding around the busy intersection of Main and Commercial streets. Town officials and residents grew concerned about safety. Some wanted to increase the fine for skateboarding in that spot. Others insisted the problem wasn't boards, but cars, and the town should lower the speed limit.
Kayaking on the Outer Cape
Wellfleet and nearby Outer Cape towns have many wonderful opportunities for kayaking. The harbors, tidal rivers and lakes provide a wide variety of kayaking experiences that range from easy to more strenuous. The variation between low and high tides can be as much as 12 feet. This makes the tide a consideration in planning these trips, and the trips are never exactly the same. Some trips are only possible at high tide. Others, like trips to Billingsgate Island are only possible at low tide, since the island is underwater at high tide. When planning a tidal trip consult a tide chart.
Biking
Wellfleet and nearby Outer Cape towns provide many biking opportunities, especially in the spring and fall when the roads are less crowded.
Hiking
Would you rather travel by foot? There are many trails on the Lower Cape where you can take in the natural beauty of your surroundings at a slower pace. These hikes vary from ½ mile to 10 miles in length.
Fishing and Shellfishing
Wellfleet’s “Fruits of the Sea”
Savor that one-of-a-kind experience as a cooled freshly-shucked Wellfleet oyster hits your palette with a sweet and briny sensation. Mussels, with their deep blue-black shells, are steamed with garlic and fresh herbs. Littleneck and cherrystone clams are commonly served on the half shell. Quahogs are served as stuffed clams or used in chowders. Soft-shelled, long-necked clams are best known as “steamers” for the way they are prepared. Sweet, rich sea scallops are available year round while the smaller bay scallop is harvested in the fall. While in Wellfleet, you must sit down in front of a steaming lobster full of luscious meat. All you need is butter and a bib! Be sure to enjoy all of our “fruits of the sea.”
