Biking

Wellfleet and nearby Outer Cape towns provide many biking opportunities, especially in the spring and fall when the roads are less crowded.

You can either plan a day of biking trip around one of the circuit trips described below or by riding one of the dedicated bike trails. The circuit trips often incorporate the bike trails.
Bike Trails
There are numerous bike trails located on the outer Cape. They vary in difficulty and length, but all offer an excursion through the scenic and natural surroundings that are essentially Cape Cod. All are paved or surfaced and reserved for bike and pedestrian traffic only.
Cape Cod Rail Trail  The Cape Cod Rail Trail follows a former railroad right-of-way for 22 miles through the towns of Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet. It’s a paved surface with few hills, and with well-marked automobile crossings, it’s ideal for cyclists. There are many opportunities to get off the trail and visit a beach. Food and water are also readily available and public restrooms can be found at Nickerson State Park, Salt Pond Visitors Center, and the Marconi National Seashore Headquarters.
Nauset Trail is 1.6 miles long, starts at the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham and winds along the upland woodlands above Nauset Marsh to a boardwalk that traverses the marsh and connects the trail to Coast Guard Beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It is an idyllic trail and perfect for families, with no steep hills or dangerous curves.
Head of the Meadow Trail in Truro runs for 2 miles between High Head Road and Head of the Meadow Beach parking lot in Truro. Flat and curvy, the trail takes you through a dune area past low-lying vegetation.
Province Lands Bicycle Trail in Provincetown is very hilly and features hairpin curves and few straight stretches. The 5-mile loop traverses several formidable dune ridges and takes riders around cranberry bogs, lily ponds, and scenic wetlands. The variety of topography is truly breathtaking. It's exhilarating to bike through the dunes in brilliant sunshine on a clear summer's day and then race through a cool, scented pinewood. Along the way you can leave the main loop and access Race Point and Herring Cove Beaches for a dip in the ocean.
