Fishing and Shellfishing

Wellfleet’s “Fruits of the Sea”

Savor that one-of-a-kind experience as a cooled freshly-shucked Wellfleet oyster hits your palette with a sweet and briny sensation.  Mussels, with their deep blue-black shells, are steamed with garlic and fresh herbs.  Littleneck and cherrystone clams are commonly served on the half shell.  Quahogs are served as stuffed clams or used in chowders.  Soft-shelled, long-necked clams are best known as “steamers” for the way they are prepared.  Sweet, rich sea scallops are available year round while the smaller bay scallop is harvested in the fall.  While in Wellfleet, you must sit down in front of a steaming lobster full of luscious meat.  All you need is butter and a bib!  Be sure to enjoy all of our “fruits of the sea.”

Fishing in Wellfleet  Whether you are surfcasting at the ocean, line casting from a boat, or fresh water  fishing in our glacier ponds, the sport of fishing on the waters of Wellfleet remains a draw to anglers from all over the world.  Please refer to our listings for members dedicated to making your fishing experience the best.  For information on fees and/or licenses:   www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw.

Shellfishing and Aquaculture  When it is low tide on the flats, local shellfishermen dot the bay shoreline as they farm the acres of prized Wellfleet oysters and clams that are nestled in their beds. Their sweet crops make aquaculture one of the top Wellfleet industries.   Try your own hand at shellfishing!   Receive a map of designated beds and purchase the required permit at Town Hall or the Beach Sticker Office.  For more info: www.wellfleetshellfishdepartment.org.
