Hiking
Would you rather travel by foot? There are many trails on the Lower Cape where you can take in the natural beauty of your surroundings at a slower pace. These hikes vary from ½ mile to 10 miles in length.
Great Island Trail - Chequessett Neck Rd., (at the end) Wellfleet. This is an 8-mile Cape Cod National Seashore trail leading to Jeremy Point. The point covered at high tide, so plan accordingly. (Guided tours available)
Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail - Marconi Area, Rte. 6, Wellfleet (508) 349-3785.
This is a 1.25-mile Cape Cod National Seashore trail and boardwalk with white cedar, high bush blueberry and other flora.
The Audubon Sanctuary is located in South Wellfleet and has 5 miles of trails that take visitors through meadows and woods, onto bay beaches and past fresh water ponds. Trail lengths vary and maps are available at the entrance to the sanctuary in the Visitor Center.
Town of Wellfleet - Box Turtle Conservation Area Trail Map: Box Turtle Woods and Bayberry Hill - Box Turtle Woods is a 6.44-acre Wellfleet Conservation Trust land, surrounded by 43 acres of inter tidal marsh.
Town of Wellfleet - Fox Island Conservation Area Trail Map: Fox Island Marsh - 29.7 acres of Wellfleet Conservation Trust land traverses pitch pine and mixed oak forest land en route to the Fox Island Marsh.
Fort Hill Trail off Rt. 6 Eastham (marked by brown and white signs) is a 1½-mile series of connected pathways that lead through cedar/oak forests, along the edge of Nauset Marsh.
Cranberry Bog Trail - Pamet Rd., Truro. This a 1/2-mile trail with parts over a boardwalk and around an old cranberry bog.
Pilgrim Heights Area - Rte. 6, N. Truro. There are two 3/4-mile Cape Cod National Seashore trails along salt meadows, a blueberry farm, and dunes, with views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Beech Forest Trail - Race point Rd. off Rte. 6, Provincetown. This is a 1-mile trail with a forest of beech trees, a freshwater pond and sand dunes.
Truro Hills Trail winds through wooded hollows, down dirt paths, through open fields, and along dune trails. This is an all-day hike and requires planning. You should obtain a map from the Seashore before setting out. (Approximately 10 miles)
