Kayaking on the Outer Cape

Wellfleet and nearby Outer Cape towns have many wonderful opportunities for kayaking. The harbors, tidal rivers and lakes provide a wide variety of kayaking experiences that range from easy to more strenuous. The variation between low and high tides can be as much as 12 feet. This makes the tide a consideration in planning these trips, and the trips are never exactly the same. Some trips are only possible at high tide. Others, like trips to Billingsgate Island are only possible at low tide, since the island is underwater at high tide. When planning a tidal trip consult a tide chart.

On the bay, winds above ten miles per hour can cause waves that make slow progress and make spray skirts a good idea for open boats. Wind is a consideration on trips over open water. Pond trips are generally shorter, easier, and not subject to tides. Wind is a consideration, but of less importance that bay trips.

During the summer months, some launch locations require town beach stickers. Town landings generally do not require parking permits.  Call the town to find out if parking restrictions are in effect.
